A rescue site with a great mission statement

Posted on: May 17, 2008

I was cruising the internet this morning, looking for ways to improve this blog and I happened upon a beautiful site called dhanametta’s webblog . For those who may not know, dhana and metta are Sanskrit words which mean, very approximately, generosity and compassion. They are fundamental concepts in Buddhism and have far broader meanings and implications than the simple definitions I’ve given, but the point is, I was expecting to land on a blog about Buddhism, perhaps one that discusses dhana and metta.

In a certain way, that’s exactly what happened: dhanametta’s blog is about generosity and compassion. The surprise for me was that rather than being a philosophical site, it’s a site dedicated to rescuing, fostering and re-homing dogs and cats in Canada and the US, with a mandate to “practice non-violent communication, peace, empathy, and compassion in our everyday lives and throughout our journey in dog rescue.” Dhana and metta in action.

Beautiful. Please visit their site and if you are inspired, I encourage you to do something to help. If you’re not sure where to start, take a look at 102 ways to help rescue. It’s easier to make a difference than you might think.
